Music I listen to

I usually enjoy any genre/musical decade besides:

Most of what would be considered today's music. (All songs are over-computerized and whatnot image)

Rediscovered

2002.

I see a 7 year old girl, sitting with her mother, watching PBS. And what does this girl ask her mother....

"Mommy, who's that on the TV?"

"That's Josh Groban."

I was watching television with my mother. We were watching his first PBS concert, "Josh Groban in Concert." I think it was around the time it premiered on PBS. I saw it, I fell in love with it, and I wanted to hear more. I sat there in my apartment's living room, playing around nonchalantly with my Lite-Brite Cube - yet intently listening to every soaring word and note. Brilliance. I swore that my mouth was slightly agape. What was he singing about, I didn't know. I didn't even care. I couldn't get enough of that amazing voice. A glimpse of heaven maybe? Or exaggeration of my blissful shock? Either way, I adored it. I thought I was on my way to becoming a true fan until....

The next year, when I completely forgot about his music (Who knows how that happened), from about 2003 - early 2007. So I didn't know about anything that was coming from Josh (i.e., Troy soundtrack, The Polar Express soundtrack, Closer, Awake, LATG, tours, yadda yadda) Let's just say I was deafened from these releases by the oncoming of bubblegum pop and the hip-hop music craze. *sigh*

In 2007, I rediscovered Josh after 4 years of listening to mainstream when stumbling upon his "You Are Loved" video on my On Demand channel on Comcast. I knew I hadn't heard from him in a while, and sooner or later, I was hooked. Hooray for serendipity! I then used YouTube to search for more songs, after kicking my brain into Groban overdrive. Songs I hadn't even heard of, and songs that seemed vaguely familiar. I clicked on every link there was, and I couldn't stop. Supposedly I felt extremely happy from hearing this music again? The thought of "missing out" on Josh's music for so long came to mind. It was as if I regretted not being on this journey with Josh, his music, and the growing fan base.

Tiny little shards of JGIC came flooding back. And all the while, I compared current Josh to JGIC Josh. I noticed he looked different, even sounded different. It had me at a loss, because he had matured so much since I last saw him. (Almost a 5 year gap?!) The first music I heard from him was that classical-type sound which I loved...but it then transformed into more pop and less classical. I became quite surprised. While I was proud of Josh's maturity and the addition of variety to each of his personal creations, something was strangely missing....

I also began to debate whether I was a Grobanite since 2002, or a Grobanite since the few months I rediscovered Josh. I'd call it either, just as long as I found his music.
Aside from my growing worry of Josh's music changing a tad too much and going mainstream, and even though he'll be altering his material (either nearer or farther to what I first heard); every new accomplishment brings back memories of a 7-year-old me, her mother, and a curly-haired brown-eyed cutie of a singer that stole my little heart.....

And don't forget the voice that goes with it. image
